The 3 Ways Coaches Can Future-Proof Their Business in the Age of AI

Every few weeks, I have some version of this type of conversation:

  • A coach reaches out, or a client I’m working with touches on business expansion and direction

  • The conversation inevitably flows to: "Lisa, what do I actually need to do to stay relevant as AI gets smarter? How do I survive the competition, especially when it’s crickets out there?"

In our latest IGNITE Mastery container, we are studying Core Competency #7: Evokes Awareness. Awareness is a coach’s bread and butter - meaning our ability to ask deep, evocative, thought-pattern-changing questions is what our industry is built on. And the struggle is often to maintain a coaching presence during this process so our clients build muscles of their OWN self-awareness.

Because here’s the Paradox us coaches face:

  1. It’s more sustainable to support the CLIENT's ability to problem-solve, develop self-trust, and strengthen their executive functioning than it is for us to give them a solution. “Give someone a fish and they eat for a day. Teach someone to fish and they eat for a lifetime.”

  2. It’s human design to want the answer, the solution, the shortcut AND it’s human design to want to GIVE the answer, the solution, or the shortcut.

As coaches, we constantly fight the urge of our human design to problem solve, and also need to enroll the client that their self-awareness exercise is more powerful than yet ONE MORE PERSON giving them an answer that may not fit their lives. Maintaining Presence and a Coaching Mindset is paramount here, and it’s understandable that we resort to telling and sharing our knowledge (we coaches want to help and serve, after all!). And we get a dopamine hit from problem solving, for extra kicks and giggles.

But every time we shorten the journey of our client’s own pattern-breaking, we rob them of the exercise to strengthen and empower their Executive Functioning and Cognition muscle. We are allowing their self-observance, management, problem-solving, trust, and commitment skills to atrophy. And we support something called Cognitive Surrender.

THIS is what coaches are up against with AI - fighting human instinct to offload our own decision making and trust in service of strengthening our Complex-Thinking and Self-understanding to become more empowered, happier humans.

First, this means enrolling yourself in why slower, deeper, more patient, more human matters more than ever. Second, this means enrolling our clients on why it matters and not giving into the "catnip" that lures us into the advice-giving loop.

But when it comes to business, how do you integrate why the field of coaching (and Evoking Awareness in others) is even more relevant, WITH effective business tactics? If you want to future-proof your coaching business, stop trying to out-produce AI. Start building what it can't touch, through Mastery, In-Person Work, and Group Coaching. And only then, harness AI for what it's designed for.

1. Mastery (and Hyper-Niching)

AI can hand anyone a framework. It cannot hand anyone mastery.

The coaches who will thrive are the ones who go deep instead of wide, who choose a lane and become undeniably excellent in it, instead of trying to "coach everyone about everything."

Hyper-niching isn't a limitation. It's a magnet.

Examples:

  • A former Accountant who built an organizational coaching business that is integrating psychedelic experiences into her brand

  • A women’s coach who supports business owners to build their operations based on their hormonal cycles

  • A Master Certified Coach who became an MCC at an oddly young age and decided to shake up the Coach-education world at the highest level of training and bring more color to the party (dat me)

When you know who you serve and what transformation you wish create, you stop competing with a sea of generalist coaches (and AI-generated content - yuck) and you start becoming the obvious, irreplaceable choice for a specific person with a specific problem.

Mastery says: I'm not offering information. I'm offering depth and specificity that took years to earn.

2. In-Person Experiences

You cannot replicate a room full of people, breathing the same air, coaching each other, crying together, celebrating together, in a Zoom call. And you certainly can't replicate it with a chatbot.

There is something that happens in a body, in a nervous system, in a shared physical space that no algorithm can generate. It's a known biological fact that nervous systems regulate each other, and when we experience safety and security, we're able to explore the path of self-actualization (Purpose, Legacy, and Impact, people!).

If your business model is entirely virtual right now, this is your invitation to ask: where could I bring people together, even once or twice a year, in a way that deepens connection and reminds people why they chose YOU? Think:

  • VIP days

  • Entrepreneur Dinners

  • Local Masterminds

  • Retreats

  • Intensives

  • Business “Camps”

3. Group and Team Coaching

Community is one of the greatest differentiators a coach can build, not only because of the relationship-first approach that leaves lasting memories but also because of the list of fans you develop as a byproduct.

Group and team coaching does something 1:1 work often can't: it creates a container where people see themselves reflected in others, hold each other accountable, and grow faster because they're not doing it alone. And guess what - you’re also teaching each individual valuable skills of taking a coach-approach to life, leadership, and relationships. That’s the gift that will always keep on giving!

AI can simulate a conversation. It cannot simulate belonging.

Coaches who build strong group containers aren't just diversifying their revenue (though that matters too). They're building something sticky, something people don't want to leave, something that compounds in value the longer someone stays inside it.

And Team Coaching is becoming a greater and greater demand in the marketplace - check out ICF's ACTC credential!

So Now What?

This summer, we gathered for our first-ever IGNITE Alumni Retreat AND I hosted the 2027 IGNITE Mastery Retreat. As I leaned into awe of these high performing coaches, I watched all three of these pillars (mastery, in–person, and group work) come alive in real time. Coaches who've spent years hyper-niching their practices through Mastery, sitting in the same physical room, coaching each other inside a living, breathing group container... it was more proof that THIS is what’s next for all of us.

We're continuing that momentum this fall with our Mastery Matters MCC Panel, bringing together 4 Master Certified Coaches to talk candidly about what it actually takes to build depth, credibility, and a body of work that lasts, in an industry that's changing faster than ever.

If any of this is landing for you, and you're wondering what it would look like to build your own version of mastery, community, and in-person connection, I'd love to talk. The next IGNITE Mastery cohort begins in late January 2027, and enrollment conversations have already begun.

The coaches who future-proof their businesses aren't the ones racing AI.

They're the ones going deeper, gathering in person, and building community that can't be automated.

With love and mastery,

Lisa
