Why Our Work is Never in Recess(ion)

Have you been emotionally caught in the chaos of the recent political and economic swirl? How has this springtime been going for you?
In my last blog post (that can be found HERE), I spoke about the importance of intentionality in the Spring Season. Humans are entities of physics, and we follow seasons and cycles as much as the weather does. With the Spring season comes an opportunity for blooming, but equally, there could be a trap of chaos and overwhelm. Add in the political and eco-global climate we’re experiencing, a dose of intense implementation of AI and fast tech, and it could be a recipe for fear, stalling, distraction, overcommitting, or eventual burnout.
Here’s what I believe is the good news - everything above, and then some, is why a transformational coach’s work is needed more than ever.
I watched a masterclass by Rich Litvin on “How coaches can be ready for a recession” (email me if you want a link to the recording!). Here was my key takeaway: “We coach to solve problems, both abstract and tangible. Whether it’s a need to feel satisfied, confident, reduce overwhelm, or it’s a need to increase income, find the right career, or launch a legacy business. In a recession, those problems become sharper. As humans, we forget that in uncertain times the need for clarity, confidence, leadership, and results INCREASES, not decreases. Clients need our help MORE not LESS. And our job is to increase our creativity, not reduce our rates.”
Transformational, ICF, and Masterful coaches with live services (practitioners working with 1v1 or 1vmany clients), are a NECESSITY in today’s economic, political, emotional, and cultural climate. As a brilliant client said recently, “Strategically, the best leaders steady the ship for others. The best companies have done well through past recessions. Coaches and leaders help others see and solve for opportunities where many don’t. After all, hope is contagious.”
Our job is to enact and elicit the changes that our clients want to see, one powerful conversation at a time. Our unique value proposition is to go high-touch in a high-tech world. The more that AI and tech has replaced human connection, the greater the importance of our work as coaches has become. With 2/3 of global employees feeling disconnected and only 32% feeling engaged, the cost both personally (higher depression and anxiety) and professionally (45% lower productive and $154 billions lost annually in low productivity) is ENORMOUS.
Coaches who impact and deepen human connection are SO needed. We are integral to the healing and uplifting of society. We have CRITICAL WORK TO DO!
And better yet… May is Mental Health Awareness Month. What a time to expand your voice and visibility as a coach, and bring the being of service everywhere you are.
So, how can you increase your belief in your business, the coaching industry, and your impact? What practices and foundations do you need to implement, during this time of chaos, change, and growth?
There are many experts out there that have their own lists of “musts” during uncertain/recession times. AND, if you need a few more suggestions, here are mine:
Shore up your foundations. Have a tracking system, if you don’t already, for past and present clients, contacts, and champions. Adjust your mindset and focus on intentional and embodied being as a coach and leader, of abundance or hope or generosity or “infinite game”. Set your intentions for this season that align with your highest and best, and have your regular habits follow. Declare and fulfill on projects. Rest, restore, plan, and take aligned action.
Connect like a fiend. Reach out to new contacts and old. Essence and greatness is contagious, and your presence will be a reminder to others to keep you top of mine. Give give give. Create Rich Relationships and provide value like it’s your job (because it is). *And look out for Selena Soo’s release of her new book, Rich Relationships! Find your people. Join a community of successful, talented people that challenge you to think beyond your comfort zone and relate to your power. Surround yourself with uplifters and uplevelers who stretch your self-identity and comfort zone. Know who your cheerleaders, connectors, and champions are. You are the average of the people you most hang out with, so be discerning!
Build your skills. Become even better at what you do, take new courses that challenge and inspire, and provide such powerful conversations that people will remember you for years. Deepen your mastery. Learn from the best and most aligned with your values.
Practice practice practice. Refine your message. Plant seeds. Stretch your comfort zone. Lean in. See the opportunities. Take a few risks. Practice aligning and re-aligning to your values. Do your own work first, and reset to an intentional mindset. Get coaching. Practice again.
